    Carnival Parade

    Everyone is invited to enjoy the free spirit of the carnival parade together with the carnival queen, murgas (groups of people singing) and comparsas (groups of people dancing).
    Very important to be dressed up!

    GALA DRAG QUEEN

    Students of 3ºB
    The gala Drag Queen is a show in which the best participant is chosen.
    It was created in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria in 1998.
    It consists of a musical show, in which the main event is a drag queens contest, animated with other performances of singers and dance numbers.
    In the drag contest, the artistic talent in the dance and the interpretation of a musical number are also valued.

    In Carnival the costumes have to be fun and not jeans with a white shirt ...
    You have to use colored fabrics, sequins, flowers ...
    You can do it yourself or buy it online or Amazon.

    Carnival pancakes
    Carnival pancakes are a typical Gran Canaria sweet.
    They are considered very famous. It is needed: eggs, flour, milk, lemon and cinnamon. They taste very good and are usually made at home.

    Pedir huevitos

    Ask for eggs
    The people dress up in old clothes and ask for the eggs for the houses and then make the carnival pancakes.

    Comparsas

    Carnival dancing groups, they take part in a contest, the carnival parade and other relevant moments of the carnival.

    Murgas

    Groups of people singing originally created carnival songs inspired by current political and social issues.

    The Burial of the Sardine

    The "Burial of the Sardine" (Spanish: Entierro de la sardina) is a Spanish ceremony celebrating the end of carnival and other festivities. The "Burials" generally consist of a carnival parade that parodies a funeral procession and culminates with the burning of a symbolic figure, usually a representation of a sardine. The "Burial of the Sardine” is a symbolical burial of the past to allow society to be reborn.

    Carnival Queen

    One of the oldest traditions in the celebration of the Carnival of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria y the Carnival Queen´s election.
    The chosen woman will be the Carnival Queen for a year, till the next carnival. She wears eye-catching and complicated costumes in an event where murgas, comparsas and other carnival characters have their moment.
    About 4000 people can watch this show on the stage and it is uncountable the audience on television.
