  • Carnival in La Palma is fun!

    "Rondallas"

    These are the “rondallas”. They are groups of costumed musicians who sing through the streets and on carnival parties.

    "Batucada"

    The batucada is a percussion group. There are usually several batucada groups in every carnival parade.

    "Murgas"

    These are the "murgas", costumed groups that compose and present a new, funny carnival song, every year. Many groups compete to be chosen the best murga of the year.

    Costumes!

    Many groups of friends work several months to prepare their costume. Other people dress up with whatever they find in their homes. Everything is valid in Carnival, you only need to dance and have fun.

    Indians Day

    On Carnival's Monday it's "Los indianos" day. The palmerian people that emigrated to Cuba and then came back as rich man, are called "the Indians". Everybody wears white, colonial clothes. Bands play Cuban music. And everybody throws talkum powder on eachother! Big fun!

    "Comparsa"

    The “comparsa” is a carnival group that goes out in the street with their music to dance. They wear costumes with a lot of color and a lot of fantasy.

    Carnival's topic

    This is the carnival poster of 2019. Every year new topics, themes are chosen. In Los Llanos (near El Paso) they have chosen for this year the theme of Mexico.

    Carnival's Queen

    Every year there are elections to the Carnival's queen. The people work all year to make their costumes. The queen’s costume can weigh more than 250kg! Their costumes are very beautiful and very colorful.

    Carnival's food

    This is called "sopa de miel" (honey soup). It is the typical carnival food. In La Palma they put sugarcane honey, almonds, bread, cinnamon and anise. Delicious!

    "Las Mascaritas"

    This is the party of the “mascaritas”, (little masks). They are people who go disguised with a mask. Usually they are children, and they visit the houses of their neighbors. The neighbors give them money or candy.

  • At La Rosa school we celebrate Carnival too. In our town we have a carnival's parade with all the schools together. All the children of La Rosa school were dressed up like pirates, of course!!
