  • The Icelandic team Performed "The Lay of Thrym"

The Lay of Thrym is one of the best known poem found in the Poetic Edda.

It tells the story of the giant Thrym who steals Thor´s hammer, Mjolnir and demands Freyja, the goddess of love, beauty and fertility as payment for it, desiring the goddess as his own wife.

When Freyja refuses to accept Thrym´s offer the gods (Aesirs) dress Thor as the bride and Loki as the bridesmaid and the two travel to Jötununheimar (the home of Giants) for the “wedding.”

Thor´s identity is comically hinted at throughout the reception e.g. the god eats an entire ox on his own, with Loki providing weak explanations that the giants somehow accept for the odd behaviour (claiming that the bride´s immense hunger stems from her not having eaten for eight days due to her excitement).

Mjolnir is eventually placed into Thor´s hand as a part of the wedding ceremony, allowing the god to strike down the giants and return home.
