    "My family" lesson plan Alicja Soszka

    My family

    The description of group:

                It's a young children group. They are 7 years old. There are 23 children: 12 girls and 11 boys. They are beginners. They can’t write and read. They attend to the first class at the primary school. It's the 1st class.  

    They like singing, playing games, moving, painting and doing other physical activities. Their weak point is focusing their attention more than 5 minutes on the same activity. Two boys are often rude.

    Everybody is curious, happy, enthusiastic and energetic.

    It's the first lesson about family.

    The children know the names of the colours: red, yellow, green, orange, pink, blue. They can count up to 10. They understand simple phrases like turn around, clap your hands, stamp your feet, jump up high, say ok, wave bye, bye.

    The time of lesson: 45 minutes

    Aims:

    • Children name the members of the family:  mummy/mother, daddy/father, brother, sister, baby, dog.
    • Children understand simple words and phrases like:
      • Goodnight mummy/daddy, Can I come in?, All right.
      • One, two, three, four, five,
      • Mummy's  in the bed, Roll over, Fall out,
    • Children can sing songs: “Five in the bed”, “The Finger Family”,
    • Children understand a general idea of the “Goodnight” story.

     

    Teaching aids:

    • a puppet,
    • some bag,
    • the flashcards with the members of the family,
    • the cards with the names connected with flashcards,
    • the CD inclusive of the recordings of songs, story, presentation, films and CD recorder or mobile phone with these records
    • the worksheets from the book,
    • the crayons and the scissors,
    • the poster story with stickers,
    • the flashcards with the colours,
    • the heart with hidden members of the family in the windows ,
    • the ball,
    • the memory cards,
    • the small beds with members of the family inside for each child,
    • an access to the internet or a DVD player,
    • the films: “Meerkat Manor Movie - The Story Begins” , “Muffin Songs :  The Finger Family (Daddy Finger) - Original Version”.

    Warm up: film “Meerkat Manor Movie - The Story Begins”/a DVD player or a computer.

    Students watch a short documentary film. Then they have to tell what the film is about.

    Presentation: My family photos /a computer.

    4.

    The game “What's in the bag?” /bag, puppet and family flashcards

    T – S

     

    The teacher has a bag and the puppet. The puppet takes one flashcard, names and puts down on the floor. Children have to repeat after the puppet.

    3 minutes

    5.

    Sing “The finger family” song / a marker or a pen, CD recorder with the record

    T – S

    Firstly, the teacher draws the faces of the members of the family on the children’s fingers. They sing and play with the song. The children sing together and act out the song.

    4 minutes

    6.

    The game “Memory” / small cards with the family pictures

    Children turn cards and name the pictures. They have to find the pairs.

    Table time: worksheet: the family in the frame / crayons

    Children should draw a line from the silhouettes  to the family members in the photo and colour the frame.

    8.

    Listen to the Goodnight story. / CD and CD recorder/ the poster and the stickers

    Teacher tells the story or plays the CD and adds the stickers to the poster.

    9.

    Play: Abracadabra... Mummy! /the poster, the family stickers, the little paper bed with the family

    Children close their eyes. The teacher takes some member of the family who is under the bed-cover sticker. Children open their eyes and guess: who is missing? Then the children play in pairs using their own puppets.

    10.

    Sing the “Five in the bed” song / CD recorder with the record, small beds with members of the family for each child

    The teacher and the children sing together and act out.

    Time table: Match the family members / worksheet

    Children should join the people with the appropriate number of characters in each bed.

    12.

    Bye-bye routine: sing the “Bye-bye song” / CD recorder with the record

    2nd lesson

    13.

    Starter routine: sing the “Hello song” / CD recorder with the record.

    Order the words to the pictures / the family flashcards and the cards with the words.

    The teacher puts the flashcards and cards with the words on the floor. The children match the names to the pictures. Then the children  have to stay next to the right picture and then next to the right word only. Then the children play in pairs.

    15.

    Game: Who is it? / a lot of letters and the pictures of family members.

    One child should put the letters in correct order and another child should find the right picture.

    The game The mummy says...” / card with the mummy for each child

    S – S 

    If the first  child asks to do some activity, another one can't do it. When the mummy (flashcard) asks to do something, the child has to do it.

    17.

    The game “Who's wearing (yellow) like (mummy)? / flashcards

    group work

    The teacher shows the flashcard and asks children: Who is it? What colour can you see? Then the teacher asks “Who's wearing (yellow) like (mummy)? If some child has yellow clothes he/she stands up. Then the child takes another card and  asks the group.

    18.

    Table time: Colour the bed green / crayons

    Children should colour the bed green, mummy red, daddy yellow and sister blue.

    19.

    Drama: Five in the bed. / a pillow and a bed-cover

    Children imitate some members of the family and they act out the story in a real life.

    Game: Family heart / the heart with hidden members of the family in the windows

    The children open the windows and guess who's inside.

    Children should draw and colour their own face in the appropriate space on the pillow.

    23.

    Bye-bye routine: sing the “Bye-bye song” / CD recorder with the record

    The teacher sings with the children.

    Extra activities:

    • The game “Find the (mummy)” - the teacher develops the flashcards in all classroom and says: Find mummy. Where is mummy? And the children have to find the mummy.
    • Memory – you need double flashcards with the animals. The children have to find the pair.
    • “Crazy family” - the teacher says: I can see crazy brother! And the children imitate the crazy brother.
    • “Family dance” - the children listen to some music and dance like mummy/daddy etc.
    • “True or false” - the teacher shows the picture with mummy and says: It's daddy. The children show: “yes” or “no”.

    Further activities:

                Next time the children will learn about free time. How can they spend it with their family?
