DAY 3: 27.01.2018

Today we went on the field trips in different groups to the Hansa Viertel and to Marzahn.

Three groups explored the Hansaviertel in a ralley. We saw examples of modern city architecture. We were amazed by the variety of highrise  buildings and design. These buildings were built right after the war and adapted to the Bauhaus style. Luckily we had studied the background of this place the day before - so we recognized many details. We even met one of the students of the German school who lives in one of these buildings and enjoyed a quick tour into his home.

Mr Tümmel, a teacher of the German school and resident of Marzahn showed the students of two groups around the highrise Plattenbau buildings of the Marzahn quarter. We learned a lot about the history and the architecture of the Plattenbau, which was typical for former East German homes. It was a totally new experience for most of us because we had never seen such buildings as a whole city quarter before. Our guide told us about the way of life in the GDR and showed us modernized examples of the Plattenbau. All in all it was an exiting day with a long programme because some of us even had the Reichstag tour in the evening.
