Chapter 1: Eating and sports habits at school

  • In SP 9 Dzierżoniów students can eat their lunch in the school canteen. They also can buy some healthy fod and drinks in the school shop - there aren't any sweets, chips or fizzy drinks!!!

Every day after the second lesson students stay in the classroom and have their packed lunch then.

Every year in April we celebrate Green Week when we promote healthy eating and lifestyle.

In Poland at primary school students have PE  lessons: Years 1-3 - 3 PE  lessons a week, Years 4-8 - 4 PE lessons a week. We also have swimming classes in Years 1-3 with  extra 4 swimming lessons a week and sports classes in Years 4-8 with 10 PE lessons  a week including 2 swimming lessons,

We have celebrated European Week of Sports since 2016 (thanks to eTwinning project!) and we celebrate the beginning of sports year at our school in September and in June we choose and award the best athletes at school during a school ceremony.

For many years our students have taken part in many sports competitions at school. in town, in region and on national level as well. They have been successful for many times.

Some of our former students have been in national teams, for example in swimming, wrestling, box.

In Chernivtsi school #22 students either bring their lunch with them or buy it at the school canteen.

Students usually bring a sandwich or a bun, an apple or a banana and a bottle of water or juice and eat their food in the school hall or at the canteen.

At the canteen there is usually a variety of hot meals available, as well as several kinds of buns (which are baked at the canteen every day) and different kinds of sweet snacks like small packets of cookies, waffles, marshmallows or marmalade candy. Hot meals can include soups, borsch, mashed potatoes, buckwheat, boiled rice, cornmeal, pea puree, pasta, etc. as well as chicken chops, fried fish, meatballs or sausages. There are always three kinds of salads or stewed vegetables to choose from. The prices are quite affordable and much lower than in the cafés in the city. Students of first grades also have free breakfast at the school canteen.

You can watch a video about a typical school lunch made by Yana and Kate B. here:

The project helped the students of 6B to find out what food is healthy for them and think over their own eating habits.

In our school all primary school students (year 1 - 4) have three Physical Training lessons a week. The students of year 5 through 8 have Physical Training lessons twice a week, year 9 and 10 have three PT lessons a week and year 11 have 2 lessons a week.

Every year in September our PT teachers organise a big all-school sporting event called “Spartakiada” during which students have an opportunity to compete in running, football, basketball and other sport activities. Pictures of the 2017 Spartakiada can be viewed on our school website:

Spartakiada is not the only sporting event at school. This year there also have been family competitions called “Dad, Mom and I- we’re a sporty family” for primary students and sport and military competitions for year 8, commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Kruty.

In 2016 the city authorities adopted a programme that will give an opportunity to the students of primary and elementary schools to learn to swim. In 2017 students of 6B also joined the programme and visited a swimming pool.

Our school also has several basketball teams of different age groups. They have been very successful throughout the years and won various  city and regional awards which are displayed in the school hall.

During the English Weeks at the school the girls from 6th B form took part in the Fitness Can Be Fun flash mob in the school hall on the Sports Day. They choreographed the moves themselves and learned the words of the fun song from YouTube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PKyBvuvV4Dk

You can watch their video in the Kip Fit chapter on Twinspace.
