Introduction of the song project

In a joint project the traditional German folk song “Die Gedanken sind frei” (Thoughts are Free) was translated into a variety of European (Spanish, Italian, French, English, Romanian) as well as several international languages (Albanian, Turkish, Arabic, Russian) to be sung by participants from all schools involved. This can be seen as an approach to emphasize the importance of spreading and maintaining the fundamental democratic values of freedom of thought and freedom of expression. The expression of the idea of freedom in different languages symbolizes the manifestation of a collective international longing for freedom and independence against the background of political discrepancies as well as a way to expand national and international cooperation.

This experience of diversity was put into practise by current and former members of our Erasmus club (grades 7-12). During this year’s trip to France, the song project was presented and participants of the Italian, Spanish and French partner schools were involved through singing the song together.
