Customs & Traditions of our countries

  • My students love this tradition and it’s a great visual for counting down the weeks until Pascha!  I can’t tell you how much we love Lady Lent.
This tradition began in the olden days to keep help children (and adults) keep track of the Lenten period.  She was drawn in the image of a nun. She does not have a mouth to remind us that we are fasting and her hands are crossed in prayer. She has seven feet for the seven weeks of Great Lent. Every Saturday one of her feet are cut off.  After the last foot is cut off, it is placed in a bowl of fruits and nuts and whoever finds it receives a special blessing. The winner will write their name and year on the back of it and will keep it as a keepsake.

A very old custom which comes from ancient Greeks is the sallow.Children every year on the 1st of March make small groups of  5-10children each group and sing a traditional song which brings the message of spring.

The tradition says that girls should wear a red and white twisted thread around their wrists from the first day of spring. This is called a “martaki” or “the little March” and it is worn to protect the young girls from the burning sun.

The “martaki” is worn until the end of March, and then the red and white threaded bracelet is to be hung on roses. They say that by changing the thread on red roses will redden the young girl’s checks and will then be taken by birds to build their nests. Some people also chose to keep the martaki until Easter time and burn it in the fire of the resurrection candle.

    Happy first of March

Clean Monday is a public holiday in Greece where it is celebrated with outdoor excursions, the consumption of shellfish and other fasting food, a special kind of azyme bread, baked only on that day, named "lagana" and the widespread custom of flying kites.
