TASTY PROVERBS AND IDIOMS : two Electronic books

  • These electronic books, created by the guys of the class  3°D of the Luigi Einaudi-V.Pareto (Italy) school comes from partners’ contributions  of the KA2 project  “Healthy Body, Sustainable World” . It was intention of this partership to carry out an activity  to  point out that the food has always influenced the languages of a population in its proverbs and idioms.

Do you know what  a proverb is ? and what idioms?

A proverb is a popular saying usually of unknown or ancient origin, which expresses a truth or a useful commonplace

An idiom, instead, is a saying  of a nation. It indicates a dialect, a regional or a particular way to talk.

If we look at the usage of proverbs and idioms, idioms are mostly used to express an idea or what has happened or is happening, while proverbs are used to give advice.

Idioms and proverbs are indicative of the way of life and the collective wisdom of speakers of a given language. Since sustenance is an integral part of everyday life, expressions with a food component are even more closely related to the necessities of life, and hence immediately reflect the mentality of a language community. Such expressions make the speech of our national languages   more picturesque and natural-sounding.

The main  objective is to present to the language learner a fuller picture of food idioms and proverbs from our eight countries: Bulgaria, France, France Martinique, Greece, Italy, The Netherland, Poland  and Turkey.

This e-book  does not claim to present an exhaustive list of food idioms and proverbs since such research is in the scope of work of a whole dictionary. It is hoped that this 13 words list divided in two books would help students to enrich their vocabulary, and on the other hand, could serve as a basis for specialized exercises, dedicated to idiomatic and proverbial lexis, and food idioms and proverbs in particular.

The wise and sometimes silly phrases or idioms related to eating we have found,Useful or not, are a fun and interesting way to learn a bit of other languages and understand different aspects of  our culture.

We hope you’ll find it very interesting.

    Have a good reading!
