Visit to the local newspaper and radio station

  • Exploring Latvian media.

This year Erasmus programme is connected with media, the way we use it and of course safety. Exploring this topic, we have written a lot of different essays, videos and even visited the main TV and radio structures in Riga. These buildings are TV tower and TV station. They aren’t just buildings which symbolize Riga, but they are also technical structures which have to perform specific functions to broadcast radio and television programme, and provide electronic communications services.

Our entire team consisting of 20 people, who are going to visit different countries, met together and went on excursion to explore part of Latvian media. By bus, we arrived at the Zaķusala island, where TV tower is located. Our first object to visit was TV station, where we met with a special person who was telling us all the stories and legends to learn more information and do sightseeing. This way we started our tour.

The most impressive room was news hall. We even had an opportunity to take a place of  one of our favourite program anchorman. It inspired us. It was so interesting to explore the room where news, which we see on our Tv screens ,are filmed every day.

The second room was a forecast cabin. Some of us had a chance to take part in a game and pretend like they are forecast anchormen.

The last room we visited was not big, but there were many historical things. It was the hottest place in the building where a lot of old photos, ancient dolls, and clothes were stored. In the historical corner, where everyone could explore old times. We saw few dolls, which participated in different shows on Latvian TV in the 90s. Talking about media we should also remember its history.

After an excursion in the LTV we visited The Riga Radio and TV Tower. The Riga Radio and TV Tower in Riga, Latvia is the tallest structure in the European Union. It was built between 1979 and 1989. Its highest point reaches 368 metres, which makes it the third tallest tower in Europe and the 15th tallest self-supporting tower in the world. There is a public observation platform just above it at 97 metres, from which most of the city and surroundings and the Gulf of Riga can be seen. The tower is built on an island called Zaķusala in the middle of the River Daugava. It takes only 42 seconds to get to the public observation platform. It was fantastic idea to visit it. We could even see our houses from it. Understanding how big Riga is,how big the world is we came to the conclusion that media is a unique innovation of humanity.

In conclusion, we want to say that this excursion made a great impression on every student, it opened some new sides of our media to us and broadened it. Participating in this tour we understood how difficult is to broadcast TV and radio programs, how much time and effort it takes. Visiting TV tower showed us how our city beautiful is, how big and unusual it is .The view which we saw from the TV tower impressed us, inspired to travel, to discover new sights. I hope you are interested in our reportage and you got something new from it too.
