Myths and Legends from Florina

  • Prespes Lakes legends (Greece)

    The Lake Prespa is located on the tripoint of Greece, North Macedonia, and Albania. It is a system of two lakes separated by an isthmus, the Great Prespa Lake, divided between the three countries, and the Little Prespa Lake, mostly within Greece. They are the highest tectonic lakes in the Balkans, standing at an elevation of 853 meters. The area contains three national parks, one in each country.

    The tears of the princess

    There are many local legends that try to explain the creation of the two lakes. According to one of them,

    there was a Fairy that fell in love with a local prince and she became a princess. When her beloved prince was lost in a battle, she was so sad that she cried rivers of tears, and the two lakes were created.

    This myth inspired some of our students to create the following stories.

    The careless sheperd

    There are many local legends that try to explain the creation of the two lakes. According to one of them,

    a shepherd and his carelessness are to blame! The shepherd was getting water from a spring near a village when he heard his sheeps calling for him. He thought that something bad was happening and left quickly to find them and forgot to turn off the tap. The water ran uncontrollably for a few days and this led to the creation of the lakes.

    This myth inspired some of our students to create the following stories.

    The girl who wanted to fill her jar with water

    There are many local legends that try to explain the creation of the two lakes. According to one of them,

    a girl from a local village was sent by her mother to fill a jar with water for the dinner. The girl walked through the village to the fountain. As she walked away she forgot to close the tap and the water continued to run for days, thus creating the lakes.

    This myth inspired some of our students to create the following stories.
