    Izmit is a city located in the Kocaeli province of Turkey, as well as a district of the province. It is located in the Çatalca-Kocaeli section of the Marmara Region, on the east coast of the Gulf of Izmit. Kuruçeşme, Bekirpaşa, Alikahya and Akmeşe first level municipalities, whose legal entities were abolished according to the Law No. 5747 dated 22.03.2008, joined the Saraybahçe First Level Municipality and this municipality was established and brought under the administration of Kocaeli Metropolitan Municipality.
    It can be said that the climate of Izmit is a transition between the Mediterranean climate and the Black Sea climate. Summers in Izmit are hot, with little precipitation; winters are rainy and generally warm. It does not exceed 10 days for the soil to be covered with snow. In summer, there is suffocating heat on the shores of the Gulf of Izmit. The highest air temperature ever measured in Izmit is 44.1 °C (July 13, 2000), the lowest temperature is -18.0 °C (February 9, 1929). The annual average temperature of Izmit is 14.8 °C. The annual precipitation in Izmit varies between 768–1153 mm depending on the regions.
