Composting at School

  • Agrupamento de Escolas de Cristelo, in Portugal, received a visit from an employee of "ambisousa". "Ambisousa" is an innovative project about how we can all participate in reducing the waste of our country that is left in landfills every month.

One solution is composting and our school had the opportunity to receive a compost bin.

On the morning of 23 November, with Dr. Bárbara, the students went to place the composter, given by "ambisousa" on the school's ecovia (eco-trail: a path where we have an organic vegetable garden, a small pond, other plants and bushes and also gymnastic equipment)

The  installation process was very simple:

    1. First, students had to put a brown layer (dry layer) composed essentially of twigs,

    2. Then a green layer (humid layer) is composed initially of vegetables,

    3. Then a green layer (wet layer) of main greens,

    4. And finally another brown layer of dry leaves and mix them together.

    5. We students have to carry out this process a few times over the weeks so that in the end we have soil rich in mineral salts.

This is a smart way that  "ambisousa" have to show to the students how to become more ecological, developing their ecological awareness, by protecting the environment

After a while, the students have observed that creatures such as worms have gone there to speed up the composting process. They also noticed that when they don´t put the brown layer in the compost bin, several mosquitoes gather around it, attracted by the smell of waste food in there, which can only be:

    1. Vegetable peelings or fruit

    2. Tea

    3. Coffee capsules (whatever is inside).

    They should never add:

    1. Plastic

    2. Food containers, such as juice boxes or yogurt boxes, water bottles cookie plastic bags, etc
