May 2016. Negotiation in Spain -results

Do you think tourism is a good thing?

    • Yes, if it isn’t mass tourism because:

    • More jobs, more money via new shops, restaurants, and buildings.

    • It encourages the construction of effective transportation methods.

    • It provides the country more profit.

    • Locals can learn about new languages and cultures.

    • It shapes the area’s culture and its place in the world.

    • It boosts the economy.

    • It develops and maintains green spaces, like parks and resting areas.

Why do you think some people believe that tourism is bad for local communities?

    • We aren’t as willing to promote local culture and rather appeal to global status quos.

    • Big corporations often manipulate or destroy natural resources and landscapes for profit.

    • Natural resources, such as water, are likely to be overused and wasted.

    • Tourism crowds open spaces, creating different forms of pollution, including noise.

    • There’s less accountability placed when pollution occurs, therefore pollution increases.

    • Deforestation likely follows.

    • Unstable, seasonal (rather than long-term) jobs are created.

    • Culture globalizes, not focuses on embracing local uniqueness.

    • Higher crime rates exist in bigger, touristy areas.

Do you think there are more advantages than disadvantages of tourism for local communities?

    Advantages

    • It produces profit.

    • It creates jobs.

    • It encourages hosting and celebrating local festivities.

    • It attracts attention to the country.

    • It encourages modern maintenance of homes, roads, and transportation.

    • Locals and tourists can create relationships.

    • Some people live on tourism.

    Disadvantages

    • It creates pollution.

    • Profits do not always go to the working locals.

    • Local traditions are lost over time because tourism globalizes the area.

    • It harms or kills wildlife and the biosphere.

    • Many of the jobs created are seasonal or temporary.

Do you think local communities change as an effect of tourism? How?

    Yes:

    • Big hotels, businesses, and resorts change the landscape.

    • Local people appeal to globalizing culture and traditions.

    • Roads, houses, and other means of transportation and hospitality are built.

    • Areas with tourism become crowded.

    • Changes in gastronomy.

    • Tourists use too much water.

    • Small companies become overshadowed by incoming big companies.

    • Business hours are longer and extended.

    • It creates more jobs and profit.

Why do we need sustainable tourism?

    • We could lose important traffic and resources for our economy, if we don’t have it.

    • We want to keep and sustain permanent jobs.

    • Some people depend on careers in the tourism industry.

    • It promotes internal and external economic progress.

    • We can display and allow others to experience our culture and its unique qualities.

    • We have an incentive to consistently take care and upkeep the environment.

    • It attracts foreigners to the country.

    • The quality of life for locals is better.

    • Tourists spend money on local products, allowing businesses to make profits off of handmade or crafted goods.

    • Locals have an incentive to take care of their products and landscapes, as tourists will return and recommend the site or municipality to friends, colleagues, etc.

How can we achieve sustainable tourism?

    • Efficient, clean transportation systems, like biking and walking.

    • Proper planning and organization of tourist attractions: local, well-made food products, resources, and services.

    • Develop museums or memorials that commemorate the uniqueness of the local culture.

    • Promote, encourage, and use clean and reusable water methods for toilets, showers, etc.

    • Campaign and use PSAs to provide information, publicity, and education for tourists.
