CEIP Huertas Mayores - Spain

  •

Our school, Huertas Mayores follows a bilingual program so the sessions are equally distributed in both languages, Spanish and English. The project is going to be carried out, also in both languages.

The group I work with is three years old kids which represent China. To start with, we have asked families to do some research about the country and bring some information or materials related to China. Every morning, we dedicate some time to show what pupils have brought to school and talk about them a little bit

    The costume is being prepared!

    10.02.2020

Children are learning about China's location, it's language and alphabet, popular traditions, means of transport, typical dishes and dances. At the same time, some of the kids, have already started preparing their costumes.

Tacking into account the number of children per class, we work in small groups in order to guide them properly.

    ZipoterosTradition

    14.02.2020

    Good morning everyone!

Today I want to talk about a Carnival tradition retrieved in Tudela in 1989.

Every Carnival the town packs its streets with colors, music and a wide range of costumes but what it will catch your attention will be the "Zipotero" figure.

"Zipoteros" were people that wore white masks, blue shirts, and black or white trousers. They also had their heads covered with different hats or headscarfs.

They carried bags full of sweets and on the other hand, a big stick with a wineskin full of air ready to hit people whose intention was to catch the sweets that were thrown by themselves.

Nowadays, "Zipoteros" emerge on Tudela's scene, and there is a big parade on the street where you can find them easily. But, take care, there is a big chance to be beaten by them!

Children from primary are going to do a Zipoteros parade in the school. I will be pleased to show you how much fun they have!

    NIAN'S LEGEND

    19.02.2020

"According to legend, in ancient China there lived a monster called the Nian, which means “year”, that would attack villages every lunar New Year, eating livestock, crops and even people, especially children.

So, every New Year’s Eve, villagers would have to flee to the mountains to avoid the Nian.

One New Year’s Eve, an old beggar arrived at one of the villages but everyone, except an old woman, was too busy to pay him any attention. The woman gave him some food and advised him to leave with them.

The old beggar told her he would help drive the monster away if she would put him up for a night at her house. She tried to convince him to flee with them but he refused so she accepted his offer.

That night, the Nian rushed into the village but was startled when he saw red paper framing the door of the old woman’s house, which was brightly lit. It was shocked stiff by the loud blasts it heard when it approached the house. When the old man suddenly burst out of the front door wearing bright red robes, the Nian, terrified, fled the village.

It turned out that the colour red, firelight and loud sounds were things the Nian feared most. By the time the villagers returned, the old man was gone so they believed him to be a celestial being who came to help them. Since then, on every lunar New Year, every household would paste red couplets on the front of their houses, let off firecrackers, kept their houses brightly lit and stayed up all night to prevent the return of Nian."

Children know about Nians monster and they have prepared a mask and a dance for all of you!
