  • Hello from Croatia! here is  a list of the 10 things Croatia is known for:

     

    1. Football. Croatian national football (soccer) team reached the finals at the last World football cup in 2018. and finished with a silver medal.
    2. Beautiful mediterranean coastline with over 1000 islands.
    3. Tourism. Croatia is a very popular tourist destination and attracts millions of visitors each summer season.
    4. Game of thrones tv show was filmed in Croatia.
    5. Historical sites. Just about every village, town and city in Croatia has some ancient historical site to visit. Pula is home to one of three existing roman colloseums. Town of Dubrovnik is one big historical site in it’s entirety. Recently some prehistoric drawings have been discovered in a cave in Istria. If you’re a history buff, Croatia is very interesting!
    6. Croatia is the last country to join European union and next year will actually get to preside the council of EU for the first time.
    7. Scientist Nikola Tesla was born in Croatia. He wasn’t of Croatian ethnicity, but his quote about being proud of his Serbian herritage and Croatian homeland is often mentioned.
    8. Croatia fought and won a bloody war for independence in the 90s, when Yugoslavia fell apart. It was the first war in Europe after WWII. This is why there are still many unsolved issues between Croatia and it’s adversary Serbia.
    9. Croatia is at the very top of organ donations and organ transplantations in the world. Many Croats will tell their loved ones to donate their organs in case of death, as a result of public campaign 2 decades ago that succesfully promoted organ donations. It also helps that a law was passed that says anyone who is declared brain dead is automatically considered a valid organ donor. However, family still gets the last word. Getting a new kidney, lungs, cornea, even a heart is a common thing in Croatia, it does involve some waiting but is free and covered by the national health insurance that every citizen has a right to.
    10. Croatia is the motherland of the neck tie. Croatian soldiers in the Middle age wore a specific scarf tied around their necks. The thing caught on and over time evolved into the most famous formal wear accessory. Hence the name Cravat, like Croatia or like Hrvat (how Croatians call themselves)
