CROATIA - Evening of Science

  • Nikola Tesla - 10 December 2014

On December 10 2014 Primary School Vladimir Nazor Pribislavec, Croatia, organized the Evening of Science dedicated to the inventor and innovator Nikola Tesla. During this event interesting workshops were held, focused on the life and work of Nikola Tesla with the aims of bringing science and scientist closer to the age of primary school pupils, encouraging the development of a positive attitude towards science and research work. We thank our school headmaster Bruno Matotek, all the colleagues and other school staff who joined the activities and helped us to make the Evening of Science even more interesting for pupils, their parents and other guests.

We have briefly listed what we prepared that evening:
Biology teachers Emina Rus and Kristina Balent introduced the students to the mysterious world of microscopic organisms and X-rays. Using interesting tasks Geography teacher Jasmina Borko-Horvat introduced all participants of the Evening of Science to the cities visited by Nikola Tesla during his life. Chemistry teacher Simona Tomšić demonstrated to the students how to make use of electricity for fun and games with balloons. In the mathematics workshop participants spent time with many interesting games and tasks that were developed by mathematics teachers Ivana Mihalic and Martina Lelak-Barić. Our Physics and Technical culture teacher Goran Pleh and his guests from the Astronomical Society Vega and Radio Club Međimurje Čakovec showed the audience in what ways we can apply some of Tesla's inventions (telescope, a radio signal, ...). Our special guest was Tomislav Belović, a pupil from a neighboring primary school, who demonstrated us his own work “Quadrocopter” with which he achieved an excellent result at the state level of competition in Croatia last year. IT teacher Iva Naranđa helped the pupils to prepare some materials about Nikola Tesla (presentation, online quiz, useful links, etc.) and published them on Blendspace.

All in all, it was a very interesting experience, a quite different evening than usual. We learned a lot, had fun and we will remember this event for a long time. Moreover, we are already creating plans for the next Evening of Science which we plan to hold during the next school year. We are eagerly awaiting to see how our partner schools from other countries have organized similar events so that we can share experiences and get new ideas.
