Primary and lower secondary school European pen pals: discovering new cultures thanks to English as a "lingua franca"

A linguistic and cross-cultural project enabling primary school students who don't share the same mother language to communicate and learn about their mutual countries and cultures thanks to English, studied in both schools as a foreign language. The discovery of the importance of English as a "lingua franca" will, hopefully, enhance the students' motivation towards studying English as a second language, creating the need to using it actively in order to communicate with their respective pen pals. Starting from a class correspondence through emails, videos and photos in order to get the students to know each others and learn about their mutual countries, schools, habits and preferences, the students will eventually be put into pairs so that they will carry on the correspondence individually using traditional mail. The project could lead to a real-task group work involving a travel-planning to the country of the pen-pals and, maybe, in the future the journey might really happen...
