NAKED EXISTENCE
According to Viktor Frankl’s point of view, the term ‘naked existence’ refers to the body.
In the concentration camp, they were forced to take off their clothes, and their hair was completely shaved.
Even though these attempt against their exterior freedom and existence, the prisoners still had their inner freedom, meaning their inner existence.
A human being has a body and a soul, and the second one is not affected in the camp.
‘Naked existence’ is the experience of the deepest feeling of the being, to possess oneself, the one that hasn’t got anything, unless what has already been lived, because ‘to have been’ is also a way of ‘being’.
With their naked existence, the prisoners still had their past, present and future, where the capacity to choose and their inner freedom reside.
Prisoners show themselves just the way they are and with everything that it gives rise to, such as survival instinct.
