4. Food for Thought

  • When we talk of "food for thought",

we refer to something that is truly inspirational,

    makes us think twice and

may even spark a lively discussion.

(OK, some of us understand it this way. In a penguin world, they may tend to take it just a little more ....  literally. Yummy!)

Forum Question 1: How do symbols influence our idea of cultural heritage?

Symbols stand for something else; often they are visible signs of something invisible. Examples are flags, the Christian cross, the dove of peace etc. Can you give other examples? Are symbols part of our cultural heritage? Do all people agree on how to interpret a symbol?

Forum Question 2: What role does memory play when people discuss cultural heritage?

Cultural heritage has a lot to do with how we remember the past - or how we officially commemorate past events by means of national celebrations, military parades or local memorials. Is our memory always reliable? Can it be changed? And how would you describe the connection between personal or collective memory and cultural heritage?

Difficult questions? Yes, but together we may come up with astonishing answers. Let's try...
