Theme: the real meaning of the Value Added Tax

Purpose
This routine encourages students to make observations and thoughtful interpretations about the Value Added Tax ( I.V.A in Spanish ).
Application
We want our students think about why we have to pay extra money when having a coffee or going to the cinema for instance.
Launch
We are showing them the following picture:
Now is when the routine starts.
1.- What do you see in the bill ?
2.- Do you think all the ítems are drinks ?
3.- Do you wonder where this 1,37 € comes from ?
We allow them exchange ideas about it.
After a first approach we show them the material previously prepared for this topic
( namely VAT poster. Find it attached to this file )
In this final stage, the teacher cast some light about the matter and clarifies some queries.
We could ask our parterns whether they have that tax in their countries and start a discussion about it
