The UNESCO list monuments from Slovakia

  •      Main role of UNESCO World Cultural Heritage is to create a list of the world's unique natural and historical monuments to guarantee their preservation and protection for next generations.
          Three localities from Slovakia were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List of cultural monuments already in 1993: Spis castle and its environs, Banska Stiavnica town and Vlkolinec. In 2000, the historic town of Bardejov was added and Wooden churches of the Slovak part of Carpathian Mountain Area were inscribed in 2008, in 2009 Levoča.
       Slovakia's unique natural phenomena are represented in the UNESCO list by Caves and Abysses of Slovak Karstand by Dobsinska Ice cave. In 2007 the Carpathian primeval beech forests of the Bukovske vrchy and Vihorlatske vrchy Mts. in the east of Slovakia were added to this list.

    The UNESCO list includes various cultural monuments and natural sceneries from our country, from Slovakia. In the list we have

    • the historical center of Bardejov,
    •  the historic center of Banská Štiavnica and its technical monuments,
    •                r exceptional caves of Slovak Karst, Ochtinska aragonite cave and Dobšinská Ice Cave
    • inhabited by the village Vlkolínec, which is also a museum documenting the way of life in the past with typical wooden houses,
    • the largest castle in Central Europe - Spišský hrad
    • the latest Carpathian beech forests
    •  wooden churches in northeast of Slovakia. ,
    • wood altar Majstra Pavla of Levoča
    • Limes Romanus, remains of Roman fortresses in Slovakia
    • the Tokaj wine region.

    European Cultural Heritage Days in Nitra are held annually in September and are part of the European Cultural Heritage Days.In Nitra today there are 87 objects of national cultural monuments and the City Monument Reservation.
