Greetings from Spain!

Our school is a public school called “Virxe do Mar”, which means “Virgin of the Sea”. It’s in an old building which belonged to the Marine Army, located in the urban area of a town calledNarón, in the province of La Coruña, in the North West of Spain (Galicia).

The region of Galicia has a long maritime tradition, as there are many coastal areas and beautiful riverside towns. More specifically, in the town of Narón, there are great historical buildings, such as the Monastery of O Couto, the convent of Baltar convent, the church of Santa Rita, the Pazo Libunca, the House of Culture, etc. and archaeological remains such Iron age forts called “castros”, and natural places such as the river Xuvia and the Atlantic coast. The food in Galicia is great, especially sea food such as “pulpo” (octopus). Many religious festivities are held throughout the year, where typical Galician food is served. 

At the school there are around 230 students from 3 to 12 years old, some of which come from other countries (Morocco, Equatorial Guinea, South America, etc.), and other parts of Spain, such as the Canary Islands, Andalusia, etc., although the vast majority are from Narón.

The students speak Spanish and Galician, (which is the official language of Galicia along with Spanish), and are also learning English as a second language.

School starts at 9 o’ clock and ends at 2 o’ clock. Some students have lunch at school, but most of them go home at lunch time.

The subjects we study are maths, English, Spanish, Galician language, arts & crafts, PE, religion, science, music and history.

Different age groups will take part in this project. The students like studying English and art and learning about other cultures.
