Our Spanish partners informed us about the 17 goals of the Un 2030 Agenda
An intro to UN Goals...
...before we start working
This is an introductory page before we start working on GENDER INEQUALITY. Fighting GENDER INEQUALITY is goal number 5 of the 2030 Agenda of the United Nations. But do you know the other goals of this agenda? You have got a link to them here:
And this is a small summary of the other goals, which are important of course, but which we are not going to deal with in this project. It has been prepared by the students of Bilbao, Spain as an introduction:
GOAL 1 - NO POVERTY
(By Naroa)
Poverty was supposed to decrease for 2030. But covid 19 has created a remarkable crisis and there are still a lot of people who haven't been got social protection.
GOAL 2 - NO HUNGER
(by Ibai)
795 million people are suffering from hunger nowadays and it is estimated that this will increase by 2000 million people by 2050 if we don´t change anything. Moreover, the Covid-19 has made it worse because it has become a threat for food systems. Apart from the Covid-19 there are other 3 main threats for food systems: conflicts, climate shocks and locust crisis.
GOAL 3 - GOOD HEALTH
(by Pablo and Izaro)
Covid has disrupted the health progression which could reverse decades of improvements. It is really big the number of countries that have stopped immunization programmes, so illness and deaths will increase. Furthermore, less than half of the global population has essential health services.
GOAL 4 - QUALITY EDUCATION
(by Izaro)
The Covid pandemic has affected quality education due to the school closures it has created. Now there is a big percentage of students out of school. Moreover, according to school completion rate there is a clear inequality between rich and poor countries. Still in some of that rich countries there isn’t a minimum hygiene for the prevention of Covid.
GOAL 6
GOAL 7 - RENEWABLE ENERGY
(by Ibai and Andoni)
By 2018 789 million people lack electricity and this is a huge problem. Not to have an affordable and clean energy for everyone is an obstacle to humanity and economic development. If that were not enough, even if the electricity is a clean energy the major part of the electricity have been done using fossil fuels. Furthermore, with the pandemic an affordable and reliable energy is critical for health facilities.
GOAL 8
GOAL 9 - INDUSTRY, INNOVATION AND INFRASTRUCTURES
(By Jon C.)
Infrastructure investment and innovation are key drivers of economic growth and development. With more than half of the world's population living in cities, mass transportation and renewable energy are increasingly important, as are the growth of new industries and information and communications technologies.
GOAL 10 - REDUCED INEQUALITIES
(by Maider An.)
Reducing inequality between countries is very important today. The main goal is to empower and promote social, economic and political inclusion for all by 2030, regardless of age, gender, disability, race, ethnicity, origin, religion, economic or other status. Before covid 19, income inequality was declining in some countries, but today the most vulnerable groups are the most affected by the pandemic.
GOAL 11 - SUSTAINABLE CITIES AND COMMUNITIES
(by Garazi)
When nothing was known about Covid-19, the number of habitants in slums increased, now because of this, most cases of the virus are detected in urban areas. Moreover, less than half of the population lives close to open public spaces, such as parks; and, only an equal share belonging to urban areas have easy reach to public transport. However, one of the problems of cities is air pollution, which caused many early deaths
GOAL 12 - RESPONSIBLE CONSUMPTION
(by Jon C. and Ander)
As the engine of the world economy, global consumption and production depend on the use of the environment and natural resources, and this use continues to have a devastating impact on the planet. The pandemic provides an opportunity for countries to develop recovery plans that can reverse current trends and transform consumption and production patterns into a sustainable future.
GOAL 13 - CLIMATE ACTION
(by Naroa and Jon F.)
Climate change is affecting millions of people. It raises the temperature of the Earth and causes extreme natural disasters. Covid 19 has helped dropping gas emissions, but the problem is there and not many countries are working to stop it.
GOAL 14 - LIFE BELOW WATER
(by Jon F.)
Ocean acidification is destroying marine environments and ecosystems. Covid 19 has helped oceans to recuperate due to the reduction of human activity. Apart from that, global marine key biodiversity areas covered by protected areas increased. Countries are going to help to stop illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing.
GOAL 15 LIFE ON LAND
(By Jon C. and Ander)
Global consumption and production (the base of the world economy) depend on the use of the natural environment and resources in a way that continues to have harming effects on the planet.
The economic and social progress achieved over the last century has been accompanied by environmental degradation that is threatening the earth, which we depend on
GOAL 16 PEACE, JUSTICE AND STRONG INSTITUTIONS
(By Maider At.)
In 69 countries (mostly low- and middle-income countries) with data available from 2012 to 2019, nearly 8 out of 10 children ages 1 to 14 were subjected to some form of psychological assault and / or physical punishment at home in the previous period. In just over one in four countries with comparable data from 2012 to 2019 (45 countries), at least 5% of women ages 18-29 reported experiencing sexual violence as children.
GOAL 17 PARTNERSHIP FOR THE GOALS
(By Ander)
Developing global partnerships and improving the ways of achieving the Goals has remained a challenge due to limited financial resources, trade tensions, technological barriers and the lack of the pandemic is adding difficulties to the implementation of the Goals. Pushing multilateralism and global partnerships is more important than ever.
