  • Gender equality

    Equality between women and men is a human rights issue and a condition of social justice, and is also a necessary and fundamental requirement for equality, development and peace. Gender Equality requires that, in a society, men and women enjoy the same opportunities, income, rights and obligations in all areas. They must and benefit from the same conditions:

    • in access to education;
    • opportunities at work and professional career;
    • in access to health;
    • in access to power and influence;

    Taking into account the inequalities and great asymmetries that persist, the promotion of equality goes through, all over the world, the empowerment of women and the improvement of their sexual and reproductive health, namely access to effective family planning. At another level of decision, the introduction of a gender perspective in policies is one of the fundamental tools to combat inequalities.

    Empowerment aims at the balance of power between men and women, by creating the conditions for the woman to be autonomous in her decisions and in the way of managing her life.

    Inequality Facts

    • Women have a higher life expectancy than men, which makes social support often insufficient, as women are always overwhelmed with support for others. The care of children, the sick and the elderly falls predominantly on women. Women and children are the main victims of sexual exploitation.Unemployment affects more women than men.
    • As they are more burdened, with the multiplicity of domestic tasks and work, women suffer from the lack of time to take care of themselves.
    • Health policies and services are not yet adapted to the needs of a gender with "less" time.
    • According to the World Health Organization, women experience higher levels of anxiety and depression. Situations often triggered by the pressure of daily life and not so much with biological factors.
    • Domestic violence mainly affects women.
    • Salaries for the same jobs are higher for men than for women.
    • Women contribute to the economy through paid work, but also through unpaid work done at home, but household chores are symbolically devalued.
    • Women and girls are subject to more damaging social stereotypes compared to those who associate with men.
    • Eating disorders, such as anorexia and bulimia, affect girls more than boys. Obsession with the body and the pressure of the media affects girls much more.
    • Poverty is female!

    Promote gender equality

    The success of policies and measures to support or reinforce the promotion of gender equality and the improvement of the status of women, must be based on the integration of a gender perspective in general policies related to all spheres of society, as well as the implementation, at all levels, of actions with institutional support and adequate financing.
