  • Do you think the Covid pandemic has affected the environment and eco behaviour of people? How?

    Ema, Slovakia

Yes, I think people are now paying more attention to environmental issues, because they had to stay at home for a long time during the Covid pandemic. So they had more time to separate rubbish and they also bought fewer clothes and maybe less travelled.

    Lenka,Slovakia

For sure it has. The pandemic has been going on for 2 years ,There is about 7.8 Billion people on the Earth and everyday we buy a new mask to protect ourselfs from COVID and throw away the old one. On the other hand, for example lot of flights has been canceled which made the air less polluted for a few months.

    Barbora, Slovakia

I definitely think so. It affected us all, for better or worse, and as I noticed, the character of the person turned out. Everyone accepted the current situation differently and some unfortunately more selfishly, others decided to protect themselves and others. However, I think we have learned a lot and we are still do. Whether you know how to spend more time with yourself or prioritize what you really need and want. Otherways i don't think it helped ecology at all, even though we often use respirators and etc.

    Samuel, Slovakia

Certainly! It had some benefits, but a lot of cons too. We did go out less, which decreased the amount of fossil fuels used for transport. On the other hand, people started shopping online a LOT MORE often than before Covid. There were even trends such as the SHEINpocalypse where people would buy loads of cheap fast fashion, try it on for a video and then donate it to thrift stores. This irresponsible behaviour contributed to the already big issue of using too much plastic on packaging.

    Karin - Slovakia

yes, I definitely think so. Because of the long quaranteen might some people realise, that the environment is important and there is a big need of to protect and help our planet - as we were a long time in lockdown, we found our sanctuary in nature. but on the other hand, because of our protection from the virus, we have to pack everything like food,.... into separate packaging and they are made of plastic which is not good for our environment, also facemasks, gloves, covid tests are not something sustainable and we have to throw it away after one use .we have not an opportunity to be as good as it should be to our planet at this time, but maybe, one day as we get used to this virus, we might add in to our everyday life something small at the beginning that could help our planet to cure

    Alžbeta, Slovakia

definitely because we clearly could see how the environment was “slowly” healing because we stop producing fossil fuels which was the biggest impact but yet here we go again doing same thing again but i think some people learnt from it and tries to help, but on the other hand face mask also isn’t good thing they can’t be reused many times and we have to change them every week or three two days depends on person which is not that sustainable as we might think.it has its + and -

    Martina, Slovakia

Yes, of course it has. For example due to the fact that poeple must have stayed home for a quite a long time, our means of transport such as cars, airplanes etc. have not been used as much as for example the previous years, which of course is good, because it has reduced the amount of co2 in the air and other greenhouse gasses. For many people this had been critical as not one enterprise had to close because they did not have enough money to keep it going any longer. As to conclude this I would say that it was benficial for the environment in one way but on the other hand many poeple suffered at this time.

    Tobiáš, Slovakia

Yes, It definitely changes the behavior of people and also the environment. Due to quarantine, more people started paying attention to the environment and climate change so they started to recycle more and stop wasting food and pollution was decreasing. But the negative side of its are face masks because people have to use them almost everywhere and the material they are made is not eco-friendly and they are polluting the oceans.

    Klára ,Slovakia

Yes, for sure for the better and worse. We can see the effect of it all over the world so Slovakia wouldn't be an exception. People started to devote their time to eco problems but on the other hand, many people started to be even more selfish with for example throwing out (and not recycling) disposable masks and gloves which are starting to be a really big worry for our planet.

    Viki, Slovakia

I think the covid pandemic affected the environment. However, it has both a positive and a negative side. On the negative side, I think the amount of plastic waste in nature has increased. For example, test material, protective equipment (coats, drapes, respirators, ...). People could not go to restaurants during the lockdown, so they ordered food in plastic package. All this material had to be disposed of somewhere. I don't think all of it was separated.
On the positive side, the lockdown limited people's movements. This has reduced the number of emissions from cars and aeroplanes. People mostly stayed at home. In conclusion, I think that like every new thing, it brings good and bad sides.

    Barbora, Slovakia

Yes, it certainly has. During last two years, the world has produced enourmous amount of face masks and plastic equipment for covid tests. Even though it was all inevitable, the waste which was made from it polluted the world a lot. On the other hand, because of the lockdown which made us stay at home, we did not have a need for using cars. We also couldn't travel in abroad, so there weren't any flights by a plane. Therefore, the amount of carbon dioxide might have slightly decrease. However, this could have been balanced with increased usage of electricity due to lockdown. So, in my opinion, covid pandemic has affected people's eco behaviour in bad but also in a good way.

    Lucia, Slovakia

Definitely it does. Not only people are suffering because of COVID, but enviroment does too. Masks and respirators are new plastic bottles, polluting oceans and forests. Everybody thinks that pandemic is the only problem these days and they are forgetting about global warming. But there is one pro too. People are travelling less, so the pollutions of air is smaller than before the pandemic.

    Patrícia, Slovakia

Of course, it has. I was thinking for a long time how to form a good answer. I am sure you must be already tired if you had read all the answers. Soo, instead of writing something similar, I decided to put a link for a podcast which I heard last week. This episode fits brilliant to our question and plus you can hear an expert speaking, enjoy, p.
