Our school

  • Primary school Horjul is a small country school. We have around 280 pupils. Since our school is rather small, the students and the teachers know one another very well. The students as well as the employees of the school are closely connected to the nature, to the country life-style and folk tradition.

The classrooms are well-equipped with modern information technology and interactive whiteboards. There is also a modern computer room. Sport activities and quality PE lessons take place in a new sports hall and on the school’s playground, both of which are situated next to the school. Our school is surrounded by beautiful green environment with our own organic garden and an orchard. There is also a playground for younger children.

Our classes are relatively small in number of pupils and students which enables us to use modern methods and techniques of teaching, as well as to carry out additional activities such as research, extra-curricular activities and other forms of education that assure versatile and universal development. We have also been introducing cooperative learning and team work within the lessons and problem-based learning. Our teachers focus on cross-curricular integration and we have been putting more emphasis on reading literacy ability.

We have a lot of projects in school that provide a versatile development of our students, such as healthy living, eco mindedness, language competences, tolerance and meeting foreign cultures, learning about their own culture, literary and art creativity and intergenerational education. We are proud to be part of European projects, such as Comenius and eTwinning. In September 2013 we became part of the Comenius project “Europe Beyond Borders” together with ten partner schools. Our school also cooperates with the youth organisation AIESEC that enables university students from 124 countries around the world to experience an international internship, volunteer work and experiential learning. We were visited by a student Maria from Argentina in the school year 2012/13, Gregorio from Brazil in 2013/14 and Gabriela from Mexico in 2014/15. In this way our students had a chance to meet new people from other parts of the world, to learn about their country, their history, culture, language, their national cuisine and custom.
