Monday, 1st of April: Guided storytelling begins

  • On Monday students began creating their digital stories on iPad. The day started with introduction to guided storytelling. Sari Lantto explained what every group should accomplish: a written story or a trailer, photos and a movie based on the story. All groups would use apps like Clips, iMovie and the book template on Pages. Everyone can create!

Hanna Viippola explained how the story would be guided: all groups would open a Keynote presentation which had a hidden storyboard with a number of thumbnails under a layer of colour created with Keynote drawing-tools. The thumbnails would be revealed using a digital eraser. Once the group had erased four thumbnails, they would get the mood and the setting (summer, autumn, winter, spring) for the movie and also one item and one animal that had to be included in the story.

After this Mirjami Hyttinen talked about the structure of a story. Stories are created by conflicts and hardships.

Then the students started working in 12 mixed groups. The work of the groups was guided by teachers advising the groups.

While students were busy working we teachers also had some time to discuss and compare our school systems, implementation of technology, how we use and manage iPads etc. We also managed to take a small pause, drive to Aavasaksa and take some group photos on the bridge between Finland and Sweden.

At the end of the day our school secretary Aila Viippola, Hanna Viippola and the student board prepared everyone a little tasting of Finnish dishes. The Vice President of the student board Saara Viippola introduced the dishes: Carelian pie and butter with egg, home made cheese with cloudberry jam, home made beer (kalja), Easter pudding (mämmi) and salty liquorice (salmiakki).

After the official program the Italians visited Ylitornio Church with Mirjami Hyttinen.
