National flag

  • The flag of Poland consists of two horizontal stripes of equal width, the upper one white and the lower one red. The two colors are defined in the Polish constitution as the national colors. Polish Flag Day is on 2 May.

What do the Polish flag colours represent?
There is a legend behind the colours of the Polish flag.
3 Slavic brothers: Lech (pronounced Lekh), Czech and Rus, were on a hunting trip. They followed different prey and split up. Lech, the leader of Lechites or Polish people, saw a white eagle guarding her nest. Her stance was proud, with her wings spread out in a regal gesture. It was a majestic sight against the background of the setting red sun. Lech was in awe. He decided to settle there. He established a settlement for his people and called it Gniezno, Polish for 'nest'. It was the first capital of Poland.

    White - for the Eagle
