The idea of the project was inspired by the decision of the European Union to make 2018 the
European Year of Cultural Heritage, aimed at promoting a shared understanding of our common
European heritage. This project is our way to contribute. We feel that the exploration and enjoyment
of our cultural diversity can function as an engine to break down barriers by favouring, on the one
hand, the consolidation of fundamental values such as tolerance, mutual acceptance and respect for
what is ‘foreign’ and, on the other, an awareness of our common European roots.
This project also comes up as a possible response to the alarming tendency, shared by the young
generations in most western countries, to disregard their cultural past and its precious legacy. The
focus of the project is to encourage our European students to discover their cultural heritage as a
unique value and, most importantly, to appreciate that the preservation of its tangible and intangible
