On the 1st of February, the students of 4th of ESO from Castell del Quer recieved the visit of Assumpta Montenllà, the writer of the book La Materinat d’Elna.
She explained us through several examples what exile is and she made us understand what a lot of people have to suffer in order to save their lives. She also explained that she intended to find out about the unknown history of lot of people when she came across Elisabeth’s story; a German woman who saved a lot of new-borns. She opened a house in Elna, only for pregnant women. They helped each other and they saved their lives. Since then, Assumpta started to send letters to Elisabeth. She also travelled to her house several times and when she had enough information, she wrote the book.
After listening to her story, many of us empathized with people in exile and we will always remember that “they can take everything from you, except for your dignity”
