Internet Safety and Netiquette

  • Online safety can be defined as an act of being safe from any risks stemming from the use of digital media. The most common risks that young people are exposed to when using digital media are:
    Inappropriate content
    Cyberbullying
    Meeting strangers
    Sexting
Children and teenagers are mostly exposed to dangers related with the inappropriate use of digital media due to the fact of their fewer digital skills as well as less awareness of potential dangers. It is important to support students in raising their awareness of possible dangers that may result from using digital media and get them to know the ways of avoiding them. The key objective of digital literacy should however be focused not only on preventive education, but also on teaching students accepted rules of online behaviour, which is known as netiquette. Most online communities define their own rules that should be applied when communicating via the Internet. Visiting this link https://www.etwinning.net/en/pub/code-of-conduct.htm you can find eTwinning code of conduct.

    NETIQUETTE RULES
Like in real life, there are GOOD BEHAVIOUR rules when you are online, too. Have a look:

    1. Be polite and treat others politely

    2. Don' t use ALL CAPS because it is like shouting.

    3. Don' t use too many exclamation marks (!!!!!!!) or question marks (?????)

    4. Think before you write. There are people and not machines that are going to read what you have written.

    5. Try not to make too many mistakes. It' s very difficult for the others to understand what you want to say.

    6. Use emoticons to convey your feelings, eg. :) for happy, :p for joking etc. It' s very easy for someone on the internet to misunderstand you.

    7. Don' t copy paste what you find on the Internet. Write your own simple texts with the information that you find.

    8. Use images and sounds that are copyright free. Otherwise, it is like stealing them if you just download them without the owner' s permission.
