A formal letter

  • WRITING TO PERSUADE OR ARGUE

The Government wants to set up a ‘Speakers Corner’ in the centre of your town where any member of the public can have a platform where they can publicly speak on any subject of their choosing.
    Task 1
Write a letter to your local newspaper commenting upon this and saying why you think it is a bad idea. You might want to consider:
v Why we need such a thing when people can write to newspapers.
v The fact that people could exploit it for their own ends.
v The fact that people could use it to spread bad ideas and messages.
v The possibility that it could cause unrest and public disorder.
v The fact that there is nowhere suitable for it to be.

    Extension task
Write another letter in reply to your first letter. This should argue the opposite point of view! Address your letters to The Editor of your local
    newspaper.

    Dear Editor,

It has been said  that the Government would provide the public ‘ speakers corner ‘ service to the public. It might sound like good idea at first but some things should be taken into consideration.Let me express my thoughts.

First of all, I admit that expressing public’s thoughts is a great idea because government can solve the problems faster and can take more concrete precautions but it is also can cause  problem between the people who thinks that their ideas were carried out while other’s not.As a result the government’s objectivitiy won’t be seen real.

Secondly, even if people say that they are open to any criticism therw might be very big problems among the ones who wants to explain their thoughts because their thoughts are right.I mean there might not be objectivity.

Finally ,people might not use it for proper puposes. So we think that it is might cause a real problem which should be thought again.

    Dear Editor,

I found out about plans to create a "Speaker Corner" by the government in the center of our city. I think that in general we should allow citizens to express their own ideas and that they could impact for the life of our city, but this type of platform is not a good idea. I think that people are mercenary and could use such a platform to realisation their own purposes and ideas, which will be beneficial only from their point of view.

As you know, bad information is spreading very fast, may form various rumors and misunderstandings, which can lead to disruption of the social order. It can cause dissatisfaction of social groups whose negative information will affect. At the moment, everyone can also write a letter to the newspaper, expressing their opinions in it, counting on the objectivity of the editorial office and the possibility of its publication. It is also possible to present your attitude on the internet, where everyone interested in a specific subject will easily get there.

The fact remains also that there is no place in the center for such a thing to arise. It would be more useful for the city and its citizens, for example a café with a reading room, a cultural and educational center, or an educational center for children and young people. Such places are not enough, and yet they serve undeniably to shape positive behaviors, emotions, develop intellectually, shape culture. For this reason I think "Speakers Corner" is a bad idea and I do not advocate its creation.
