Using a PBL approach answering to the Driving Question “Why diffenent civilizations developed different numbering systems?” we aim to show students that the use of numbers has arisen from the real needs of the different civilizations and each of them has achieved different numbering systems, useful to their needs. The path ended historically when Fibonacci brought the Arabic figures and the positional numbering system to Europe: from that moment on, the mathematical language slowly became universal.
