MODULE 1 INCLUSIVE CULTURE FOR PEOPLE WITH FUNCTIONAL DIVERSITY

  • Functional diversity consists of a complex arena of diverse behavioural, physical and emotional needs. People with functional diversity are much less likely to participate in cultural activities because of negative attitudes and prejudice.

One in six people in the European Union (EU) has a disability that ranges from mild to severe making around 80 million who are often prevented from taking part fully in society as reported by EU Labour Force Survey ad hoc module on employment of disabled people (LFS AHM), 2002.

The United Nations Convention on the rights of persons with disabilities states that "persons with disabilities include those who have long-term physical, mental, intellectual, or sensory impairments which in interaction with various barriers may hinder their full and effective participation in society on an equal basis with others"(From http://ec.europa.eu/eurostat/web/health/disability)

According to the European Disability Strategy 2010-2020, there are still many obstacles preventing people with disabilities from fully exercising their fundamental rights - including their Union citizenship rights - and limiting their participation in society on an equal basis with others. Those rights include the right to free movement, to choose where and how to live, and to have full access to cultural, recreational, and sports activities.

    ACCESSIBLE CULTURAL HERITAGE:

Look at this video and you can see how The Reichstag(Berlin-Germany) is an example of an inclusive policy.

ATHENS: A lift for wheelchair users was installated in the Athens Acropolis. Pushchairs and people with walking difficulties can also use it. Since 2004, the Acropolis is "Accessible for All".

LLEIDA: Garden of the senses is a kitchen garden with the aim to stimulate all our senses: hearing, smell, sight, touch and taste. It is an accessible way to discover nature where everybody can work and enjoy contact with the earth. All the area is adaptaded for blind people and people with reduced mobility.

Task 1: Choose one of these places and propose how it can be more accessible(physical access) or how you think that a person with functional diversity could enjoy the visit. Add a picture to present your idea.

    Hecho con Padlet

There are some EUROPEAN CULTURAL HERITAGE made by famous artists who had great skill and creativity but  had also some disabililities: MICHELANGELO, FRANCISCO GOYA, PAUL KLEE, VAN GOGH AND HENRI MATISSE. Besides, writers as CHRISTY BROWN, JEAN-DOMINIQUE BAUBY OR JOHN MILTON suffered some health problems.

Task 2: Go to the forum(MODULE 1) and share with your partners how you think people with functional diversity have been represented in Art History.

Task 3: Choose one of these European creators, find a picture of their artwork or written works and comment on something related to their biography. You should use this Linoit application. If you cannot see it, you will have to deactivate protection on the page (click the lock at the address page).

Task 4: First of all, you should find your working group(look at the child page behind "Let's introduce ourselves"-Working groups"), decide amongst yourselves the city you would like to know, find out information about the accessibility of the city you have chosen, and share your presentation. Find the link of your presentation looking at this link:http://popplet.com/app/#/4509261
