Food in Roanne

    The « Côte-Roannaise » is a red, white or rosé wine of controlled designation of origin produced in the Loire department, west of the city of Roanne. This appellation is part of the wineyard of the Loire Valley.

     

    The vineyard probably has a Gallo-Roman origin. However, the first source mentioning it on the territory of the present commune of Villerest dates from 970. It grows constantly during the Middle Ages with the monastic orders
    and the local lords.
    Today, the vineyard extend over 210 hectares to he west
    of Roanne city under the « Madeleine monts ».
