Father's Day

  • From Álfaheiði in Iceland

Bóndadagur, or Husband’s Day, when wives and girlfriends in Iceland pamper their men. Bóndadagur also marks the beginning of the old Icelandic month þorri. In many households, bóndadagur is celebrated by eating the traditional þorri food.

Women also think of other ways to show their men appreciation by taking them out to a fancy dinner or preparing them a nice meal at home—steak being a favorite option. Most men would likely also be happy to receive specially-brewed þorri beer, carried by the state-run wine stores at this time of year.

This year Bóndadagur, Husband‘s Day was at 19th of January. In our school was a lot of fun with us that day. We invited grandfathers, fathers and brothers to breakfast. Traditional shark and flat bread and smoked lamb meat. Then we gathered in the hall and sang together and watched the play of life in the old days. The actors was in customs and use props from the old days. For lunch, we had a old tradititional food. The day was particularly fun.
