BIODIVERSITY OF RIVERS

twinspace-logo

Rivers maintain unique biotic resources and provide critical water supplies to people. Along the river valleys there is a living space, shelter, food, many rare and endangered plant and animal species. Half of the described species of fish live in fresh water, mainly in rivers. The river valleys are characterized by one of the highest rates of biological production, species diversity and abundance of organisms. They are home to valuable natural habitats, many of which are protected.
