Christmas in Austria

  • Christmas in Austria

    Teresa Nobis

In the evening of 23rd December our living room is locked. My parents decorate our Christmas tree there.

On the 24th we always have a duck for lunch.

At the same time we watch some Christmas films.

After lunch we always have fruit covered with chocolate. We make them ourselves with our chocolate fountain.

At 4 o'clock may whole family goes to church to the children's Christmas mass where my sister and I play some Christmas songs with the youth orchestra in front of the church.

Then we go home and relax and we play some games.

When we hear the Christkindl's bell we can go into the living room. There is the beautiful Christmas tree with a lot of presents.

We always sing "Stille Nacht" (Silent Nigth) and read a Christmas story.

Then we can unpack our presents and we take some photos in front of the Christmas tree. After the gift we go to our grandma (may dad's mum) and eat the traditional "Bratwuerstel (sausages) mit Sauerkraut".

On the 25th all my dad's relatives celebrate at my grandma's place. On the 26th my mum's relative celebrate together at my other grandma's place.

    I really love Christmas

We decorate our Christmas tree the day before Christmas. We celebrate Christmas on the 24th of December. In the morning my family and I make some cookies and watch some Christmas films. We don't have lunch. After that we visit my grandfather in the old age home. Then we go to the church. After church we go home and eat sausages with Sauerkraut and bread. Later my brother, my sister and I have to go in our rooms. A few minutes later some presents are under the Christmas tree. Before we unpack the presents, we sing some Christmas songs.

    This day everybody is happy

In the morning of Christmas on the 24th December we decorate our Christmas tree with candles

and Christmas balls. For luch we eat nothing so in the evening we are very hungry.

At 4o'clock we go to the church because there is a childrenmate.

We watch a natirity play and sing some Christmas songs. After church we go home and eat sausages with potatos and sauerkraut. When we have finished we sing songs again and I play the flute with my dad and I play the piano too. Before we unpack our presents we take some pictures in front of the Christmas tree with our pets. For the picture we light the candles and the Sparkler.

The best thing at this is to unpack the presents. In the evening we play with our presents and

watch TV. On the 25th December we celebrate Christmas again at my grandma's place. My mother's

relatives also come every year. We have breakfast and talk together.

After the breakfast we eat some Christmas Cookies. My dad and I also play some Christmas songs

with the flute and the others sing. After singing the songs we take a picture and unpack the presents.

We also go for a walk with the whole family.

In the evening we celebrate with my dad's relatives.

How I celebrate Christmas in Austria

On December 24th in the morning I get up at 8am and make a nice breakfast for my family. The advent wreath is placed in the middle of the table. After breakfast my dad, sister and me go to the local fire brigade station  where we fetch the light of peace which was lit in Bethlehem and came all the way to Austria. Our job is to distribute this light  to households.

At lunchtime we return to the fire brigade station and eat sausages there. In the afternoon we return home and decorate the Christmas tree. It is a real spruce tree.

At 4pm we go to the children’s mass which takes about one hour. Afterwards we unpack our presents which lie underneath the tree. We also sing a lot of German and English Christmas songs.

We pray while the candles of the Christmas tree are lit. Around 6pm  we have fried sausages with sauerkraut. The rest of the evening  we play with our new toys and enjoy this holy night.

    Christmas with my family

    Dec. 24 th

I get up at 8 a.m, then my mum and I go to church . When we return home ,the living room is decorated with the Chtistmas tree and we listen to quiet music. We sing “Silence night“

Afterwards we blow out the candles. We give all presents to each other, open them up and look what's in them. At luchtime my family and I visit my grandma where all the family gets together and we enjoy lunch together..

After a while of talking to each other, the Christmas bell rings. This means that we all go into the living room where a wondurfully lit Christmas tree waits for us , we sing songs, then we open the presents. For me, nothing counts more than being together with my family at that special time of the year!.

    Dec. 25th

The next day I sleep till 10 a.m because the day before was very tiring. Then I play with my cat. At 11 a.m my aunt picks me up and we go to her place. I help her cooking, because later many relatives are invited to her place. There's a big party.. Then we get more presents but presents aren't so important for me!

We have a lot of fun and it's always wonderful to celebrate this day together.

    How I celebrate christmas

On Christmas morning I decorate the Christmas tree. My sister and my dad help me. In the meantime, my mum works in the kitchen. When we have finished decorating, we watch TV and make ourselves comfortable. At four o´clock my mum, my dad, my sister and I go to the church. Afterwards we drive to my grandparents. There we meet my uncles, aunts, and cousins. Then we can open our presents which are lying under the tree. Later we eat cookies and sing Christmas songs. My cousins and I play games. In the evening we eat soup and sausages. Finally my family and I drive home. There is a present for everyone under the tree. The lights on the tree are beautiful. Afterwards we play with our presents. We go to bed late. It is a beautiful day.

What I do on Christmas day:

Fist I get up at about 10 o'clock and have breakfast.

After breakfast my Mum and my Dad tell me what I have to do. Then I go out for a walk to get some fresh air. I sometimes ride my bike in the woods. Later I go and do my “To Do” list. The rest of the day I can do what I feel like. I can play on the computer or play with my dog. Lunch is very small because I want to eat a lot in the evening. After six boring hours it’s going to happen. All the family is there. My grandmother, my Dad, my Mum, my brother and me. Then my dad disappears and then we hear the bell ringing in the room where the Christmas tree stands. Soon after, we can go into the living room. It’s wonderful to see the lights of the burning candles and the Christmas tree is so bright.

Fist we sing many different songs and then we unpack our presents. The 24th December is the most wonderful evening of the year.
