A Summary of the Field Trip, Finland

  • Field trip to Luontokapinetti in Yläne

A group of 8th graders from Euran yhteiskoulu visited Luontokapinetti in Yläne (http://www.luontokapinetti.fi) on 30th October, 2019. It was an excursion from Biology course, but mathematics and art were also connected. First we went to see an exhibition about Finnish nature. It was very well done. The guide introduced the main points of the exhibition. After that students took a closer look at it in small groups. When looking at the things displayed the students had to spot certain facts to be able to fill in a crossword puzzle in the handout they had been given. The exhibition gave a wide perspective to Finnish nature and things that are connected to it. These were some of the topics: human influence on nature, recycling, rock foundation, ice age, plants, animals and habitats.

When we had seen the indoor exhibition, we went outdoors and started walking along a path in the nature. We worked in small groups and answered tasks in an application called Seppo. We had to find leaves of certain trees and take pictures of them, estimate the height of a tree and an observation tower, identify plants, different types of moss and lichen, make an elk out of natural materials and count the price of a log. Students were motivated and the sunny fall weather was a nice addition to a successful excursion. Students experienced and saw many new things, and this field trip taught them many things and gave them a lot to think about.
