    KOMOTINI - GREECE

    4th experiment

    "Volcano explosion"

Our last experiment  concerns  volcano explosion. You will need baking soda, a bottle, food colour and vinegar. We placed some of baking soda into a boottle covered by a gofre paper. We added red food colour and then poured in some of the vinegar. The eruption began rapidly. Why? The baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) is a base while the vinegar (acetic acid) is an acid. When they react together they form carbonic acid which is very unstable, it instantly breaks apart into water and carbon dioxide, which creates all the fizzing as it escapes the solution.

We repeated also the experiment with a giant  orange Pomelo.

    3rd experiment

    "Colouring with soda and vinegar"

If you want to do this experiment you will need watercolour paper, soda, vinegar and paints.

    1. Cut hearts, houses etc things that children have drawn in waterclor paper.

    2. Pour vinegar into the paints or food colouring.

    3. Pour soda with a spoon across the drawings.

    4. Use a medicine dropper to spead out the coloured vinegar to start your reactions.

    5. Set the drawings aside to dry.

Here are our houses. Didn’t they come out lovely?

2nd experiment with soda and vinegar

    "Sorting snowmen"

First  each class created a snowman with soda and water.. We poured in a bowl soda, added a little water and mixed them with our hands. Then we made eyes and nose with different materials. We put each snowman in the freezer for 24 hours.

We put all the snowmen in a tray and asked the children who was the tallest snowman and the shortest. They put them in a row according their height.

Then we poured vinegar in each snowman and watched what happened. They melted just like the real snowmen.

Every day we looked to our apple and marked on the board how to change color, size and hardness of apple. After 5 days we did conclusions, witch material (vinegar, air, oil or water) did the most change for apple. Actually it is air.

    FOAMING SNOWMAN

Because it's still very cold outside in Turkey, we decided to make snowmen in the classroom, but with a little twist :) We used the following ingredients to make our snowmen: baking soda (2cups), salt (2 tablespoons), water (8 tablespoons), diahsoap (1 tsp), we mixed it all together and formed ''snowballs' for the snowmen. After our snowmen were ready we melted them using vinegar :)
