In Italy pupils usually wear an apron at school (in kindergartens teachers too!) . It is not compulsory, just a good habit so they don't go home dirty.

Our kindergarten is located in a town called Vrhnika (with a population of little less than 9000 people). It is situated 20 km from our capital Ljubljana. Vrhnika is surrounded by forest, marshland and also by karst landscape. It's a nice green town with mainly residential areas - majority of residents commutes to nearby places for work. Our kindergarten consists of 5 units (4 are located in Vrhnika and 1 in a nearby village Bevke). It provides care and education for children aged between 11 months and 6 years. Our day starts at 5.30 in the morning and ends at 17.00 (children can stay in the kindergarten for maximum time of 9 hours). There are 6 children in special needs class 14 children in classes aged 1-3 years, 19 children in classes age 3-4 years and 24 children in classes 4-6 years (children in Slovenia start elementary school at the age of 6 or 7). In every class there is a kindergarten teacher and teacher's assistant.

Vision of our kindergarten is for it to become second home for children that provides them with security, acceptance, love and freedom. We teach them in a multisensory learning environment where values of interculturality and permaculture are respected. From the earliest age children are learning to take care for the world we live in. We use eco friendly washable diapers, recycle, compost vegetable and fruit scraps, provide children with partly organic meals, grow our own produce in school garden and follow zero waste guideline of our municipality. We try to be outdoors as much as possible in all weather conditions and involve local community in our school work.

Our unit is called Želvica  (The Turtle) and it is named after protected species of turtle that lives in the local marshland. It was built in 2007. There are 197 children, 22 teachers, special education worker, 6 management personnel and 4 technical workers (assistant cook, 2 cleaning ladies and a janitor). In my class there are 21 children aged 3-5.
