MODULE 2 DO YOU KNOW ANY MIGRATION OR REFUGEE STORIES?

  • Everyone has a story to tell_about ourselves, our families, friends and ancestors_.

Migration is not a current affair.

Throughout history, people emigrated to other countries in order to seek a better future.

Many a time, they brought along with them traditions and customs that were prevalent in their home countries, and this way they endowed their new home with new ideas.

Cooking, entrepreneurship, science, you name it!

Did you know that one of the most popular dishes in the U.S.A. comes from Hamburg in Germany?

Yes, that's right! Hamburger was introduced in the U.S.A. by German immigrants in the early 20th century.

Or in more recent times, you may have heard of Steve Jobs? You may know that he was one of the most brilliant minds of the last century, but you may not know that he was born to a Syrian father and a German-Swiss mother? The rest is history!

It is not the first time in history people are made to leave their homes for one reason or another. The Greek patners' school is located in Kesariani (Kaisariani). The area was originally intended as a refugee camp for refugees who had to leave Asia Minor because of war in 1922. The refugees managed to integrate smoothly with the residents of Athens, bringing their traditions along.

When two bodies wearing identical wetsuits washed ashore in Norway and the Netherlands, journalist Anders Fjellberg and photographer Tomm Christiansen started a search to answer the question: who were these people? What they found and reported in Norway’s “Dagbladet” is that everybody has a name, everybody has a story and everybody is someone.
